James Brothers are the longest established Independent Funeral Directors in the South Hams and Plymouth area. Formed nearly 150 years ago by Ned James, it has been passed down through the generations of the family since; to his son Harold, then to Allan who passed it to his half-brothers Ralph & Maurice (Horace). It is currently run by Ralph, his wife Penny and their son Tim, which should ensure it stays in the family for another generation at least. At James Brothers we understand how hard it can be, when you find yourself in the position of having to arrange a funeral for a family member or close friend. There are very few times in life when things can become so emotional and trying. Not only is this something that we understand, but it is something that we have grown up with, watching our parents and grandparents work in the profession. We are here to help you take care of the necessary arrangements from the initial contact through to the funeral itself and beyond. Talking through the process, helping with the relevant paperwork and procedures, the provision of cars, obituaries, floral tributes and memorials – in fact anything and everything you might need. We have served the immediate local community from the days when Harold would sit on the steps of his Brixton cottage, handmade coffins drying in the sun, when his wife, Freda would line them individually. Our area of service has increased with time, as local village undertakers have become few and far between.
